It is CRITICAL that we all create, find and take time to connect to ourselves, to our souls, to our likes and loves every day! We NEED to find and nourish the parts of ourselves that we may feel disconnected from or that we may have lost somewhere along the road of childhood to adulthood or particularly as some of us may have become parents in our journey or are perhaps caring for elderly or sickly parents.

As a mum of three children myself, the struggle to gift myself a little bit of my own time is so real. It can be extremely overwhelming at times being blessed with the incredible opportunity to look after and guide these precious young people in their lives, especially without a parenting manual guide on how to do it!!!! The constant questioning and guilt that we can feel as parents and especially as mothers about putting ourselves before our little one’s can be very intense. But yet, if you listen to the safety instructions on board an aeroplane before take-off, it is recommended that parents, guardians or carers ‘fit their own oxygen masks first in the case of an emergency’ so that they are better able to help those that are in their care. Makes complete sense but so many of us would probably try to do the exact opposite in such an emergency and can’t seem to apply this rationale in our everyday living either. We tend to make sure that everyone else has enough air and oxygen and whatever else it is that they need before we do. Where do you think this will end up??

This is why it is imperative that we don’t get lost or defined in any of the roles that we play in our lives and that we do whatever we need to do to ensure that we lively truly, happily and wholly and that we show up and be present and understanding to the best of our own individual ability, while still feeling that we are a recognisable and loving part of ourselves!

That used to be me. I used to push myself to the highest of levels in everything that I did. I had to be the best. I had to get the best exam results, study the hardest, work the longest hours, push my exercise and fitness to limits of exhaustion, sleep little, move fast, while competing against ‘nobody other than myself’. Needless to say, this erratic way of living and behaviour towards myself resulted in mental, emotional and physical illness that railroaded me for over 3 years.

So what was the lesson to learn? It was simple! In order to work hard, to become more efficient and effective, to push myself out of my comfort zone, to achieve my hopes and dreams, I had to ‘take my foot off the pedal’, ‘to slow down’ and ‘retract inwards’, towards my heart and soul. I had to become ‘my own inner coach’, I had to unfriend my inner critic who bullied me for so long and who was constantly pushing me to levels unsustainable to my mental, emotional and physical health.

Once I started ‘my new hybrid way of living’, of understanding, listening to, empowering and motivating myself, I started to feel more fulfilled in every ounce of my mind, body and heart than I did in my whole life! I became alive and present. I learned to accept and love myself from the inside out. I had to do as Brené Brown describes as:

“To listen to your body and respect how it feels is a powerful act of self-love”

(Sonia Choquette)

This is a very powerful question, “what does my body NEED right now?” But it’s also a very difficult question to answer as it requires being able to quiet the chatter of your mind and to learn how to deeply listen to the whispers of your soul. I ask myself this question most days, particularly on the tougher days and really listen for the answers, as I have learned the hard way that the body is a temple, what we put in, we get out and it deserves to be treated with tenderness, care, kindness, understanding and love.

It seems that over the last few decades, we are being conditioned to just keep going, to keep pushing on with life, with work, with family, without taking much time to consider the effect of this erratic and demanding way of living on our bodies. I personally have never been taught (before introducing Mindfulness, Kindness and Compassion into my life) to praise my body, to listen to my body and to its subtle or not so subtle signs and messages that it continuously sends to my heart and soul. Before this, I would have found it absurd to actually ask my body what it ‘NEEDS’ in any moment and even more absurd to listen and hear the responses to this question, until I learned the importance and power of doing just this!

So why do we find self-love, self-care, self-compassion and self-kindness for our bodies or indeed our minds so difficult? I guess it’s because, it can be a daunting and unfamiliar experience to turn ‘WITHIN’ ourselves, to tune into the fine frequencies deep within our hearts and souls. It can be uncomfortable for many of us to get to know our ‘true selves’, our ‘true souls’ as we are so used to just making and pushing our bodies to perform, to operate, to live. It takes courage to confront, to calm, quieten and disconnect from the stories and uncertainties that our minds will always try to convince us of. A quote I love to illustrate this is:

“Go inside and listen to your body, because your body will never lie to you. Your mind will play tricks, but the way you feel in your heart, in your guts, is the truth”

(Miguel Ruiz)

So what can we expect to hear back from our body when we ask it ‘what it NEEDS right now?’ The most common replies will most likely be sleep, better rest times, balanced nutrition, water, exercise, quiet time to rest your mind, time to spend with family and friends, time to spend in nature, time to connect with and care for ourselves and others. I feel that by continuously checking in with and tuning into our body and granting it whatever it is that it truly needs in any moment, we can live a more balanced life in the mind, body and soul. We can learn how to delicately protect our body by honouring it through active listening and therefore, we can prevent it from getting to a stage where we crack, we break, we fall apart as we are burned out. A quote to illustrate this is:

“If you listen to your body when it whispers, you won’t have to hear it scream”

(Project Happiness)

Once you learn the art of connecting with and listening deeply to your body and its messages and signals, the next part of the process is to learn to honour your body by letting go of all the pressures we regularly put on ourselves, the demands, the expectations and just ‘grant’ your body whatever it is that it needs. This is by far the hardest part because it requires making space and time in your day, in your life, for self-care and respect, in what ever shape or form that works for you. But this is the most magical part of the equation! As you listen more to what your body is telling you and as you actively implement its suggestions, you are honouring and taking care of yourself on a deep, personal, intimate level and your body will respond by helping you to feel empowered, energised, compassionate and deeply connected to your soul and you will be able to live more peacefully, with inner calmness and an enriched and nourished respect for your amazing body!

A thought to leave you with:

“Take Care
Rest your mind to stay healthy
Rest your brain to think positive
Rest your soul to keep your body alive”

(Diya)

How to ASK, LISTEN TO and RESPECT ‘what your body NEEDS right now’:

The following is a guide on how to ASK, LISTEN TO and RESPECT ‘what your body NEEDS right now’:

During the normal moments of your day, form the habit of asking yourself ‘what does my body NEED right now?‘

Listen intently and notice any guidance or signs that your body may send you in response. If you feel that something is not working for you at the moment, this is your ‘gut instinct’, your ‘soul’ communicating with you. You just need to really tune in and listen.

Be courageous and respectful in granting your body whatever it is that it needs in any moment. If it is sleep, then make time to take an extra rest in your day or to go to bed earlier. If it is better food choices, tune into how the foods you eat make you feel. If it is fresh air, make time to spend some time outdoors.

Notice any signs or signals from your body that you may be overloaded, you may be under too much stress and pressure. Your body may need you to do absolutely nothing, to just let yourself be as you are in your moment. If this is the case, trust that you are enough and grant your body what it needs.

Express appreciation to your body for the incredible work it does to keep you alive every day. Develop a deep and nurtured connection with your body so that you can hear the whispers of your soul.

Setting boundaries is something that can be so important for us all in many respects. It can be important for us to seal or fence off our homes, so that our external boundaries are set and laid out for everyone to see where our personal space starts and where the line occurs for someone to enter into that space.

Boundaries can be just as important in terms of our own mental, emotional and physical space. I feel that it is essential that we all individually establish our own personal boundaries so that we and others know what is acceptable or unacceptable in our personal lives.

“Daring to set boundaries is about having the courage to love ourselves even when we risk disappointing others”

(Brené Brown)

What a beautiful quote by Brené Brown in relation to our personal boundaries.

This is something I struggled with for a long time. As an empath and an energy worker, it is in my nature to always want to help, fix and heal everybody and everything! I struggled so much in being able to say ‘no’ to people who may have been asking something of me even if I wasn’t in full health myself and in turn I would have been left feeling depleted or energetically drained as a result of ‘not listening’ to my own inner warning alarms.

It is a difficult task to start to respectfully listen to and hear your own inner voice and its guidance and wisdom. It takes a lot of courage to start to clearly define your own personal internal and external boundaries in order to protect and nurture your own health and wellbeing. I slowly learned that ‘saying an outer ‘NO’ is saying and inner ‘YES’ and that it is ok to do this, without feeling selfish or uncaring. A quote I love to illustrate this is:

“Boundaries are not meant to control others, they are meant to be used as guidelines for you to know what is acceptable and what is not in your life”

(sherylgriffin.com)

When we talk about boundaries in the context of mental health and well-being, it can be things like your personal lifestyle choices, your circle of family and friends, your beliefs and values and how much of yourself that you define as acceptable to invest into any of these areas on a daily basis.

It is about being able to identity and outline where your own cut off points are once your own defined boundary line is reached. When I started to establish my personal boundaries in every aspect of my life, I did feel selfish and uncaring, particularly when it came to downsizing my close/support circle of family and friends, but as time went on, I learned and felt that defining these boundaries was the best gift I could ever have given myself. It was a way of protecting myself, my energy, my beliefs and values and it enabled me to live alongside likeminded people. As so beautifully put by Mandy Hale:

“It is necessary, and even vital, to set standards for your life and the people you allow in it”

Let’s look at what a boundary is: “a definite place where your responsibility ends and another person’s begins. It stops you from doing things for others that they should do for themselves” (trans4mind.com).

It is easy to see the importance of setting up physical boundaries in our external lives, such as fencing, hedging, gates, separate entrances and so on. It is more difficult to see the importance of setting up our internal or non-tangible boundaries so that we protect our inner selves, so that we don’t let others deplete and drain us by crossing over our boundary points.

Now let’s look at what a boundary does: “a boundary also prevents you from rescuing someone from the consequences of their destructive behaviour that they need to experience in order to grow” (trans4mind.com).

So in effect, setting up your own internal and external boundaries is imperative for everyone involved. It helps to set clearly defined guidelines of what’s acceptable or unacceptable behaviour in your life. It helps to protect all parties involved from each other and helps to alleviate any confusion about your expectations.

An empowering thought to leave you with:

“Boundaries
I allow myself to set healthy boundaries
To say no to what does not align with my values
To say yes to what does
Boundaries assist me to remain healthy, honest and living a life that is true to me”

(simpleeserene.com)

HOW TO IDENTIFY AND ESTABLISH YOUR PERSONAL INTERNAL BOUNDARIES:

Create a space in your day where you can quietly connect with your mind and body so that you can hear what your soul wants you to know.

2. Close your eyes if you wish. Sit quietly and take 5 regulating breaths, in through your nose and out through your mouth (if possible, if not just breathe in your own regular rhythm while focusing your attention on your feet resting on the floor).

3. As you continue to relax into the moment, place one hand over your heart chakra (your centre of compassion, empathy, love and forgiveness) and the other hand over your solar plexus chakra (which regulates personality, ego, identity, personal freedom, choice and authenticity, located in the upper tummy above the belly button and below the diaphragm).

4. Now ask your soul, what do you want me to know in this moment? How can I protect my personal internal space? How can I establish my personal internal boundaries?

5. Carefully listen to any thoughts, visions or feelings that you may experience in this moment. This is your soul communicating to you what you need to know. This is your gut instinct and it will never let you down.

6. Continue to breathe in your own natural rhythm while purposely letting go and releasing into the moment. Continue to ask for guidance on any area of your life that needs structure and boundaries. Carefully listen to and tune into your body so that you can hear the guidance from your inner self.

7. When you are ready, open your eyes if you had them closed and let go of this practice. Feel the flow of courage, self-love and self-respect flow through you as you start to establish and define your internal boundaries and respect your inner soul.

“At the still point, where the calm is, in the eye of the storm, amidst the chaos of reality … […]

“At the still point, where the calm is, in the eye of the storm, amidst the chaos of reality … There – I found myself” (Tulasi Menon)

The beauty, strength and yet serenity in this quote is so powerful, inspiring and a pure force of nature. That’s why I love it and sometimes it feels like the storm, the hurricane, the tsunami, and the destruction of Coivd-19 has really pushed so many of us deeply retract into the ‘eye of this storm’. We have had to try to find and discover strength, courage and determination deep within ourselves.

Before Covid-19 introduced itself to our world and started to batter our lands and our shores, many of us often expressed how challenging we found it trying to keep up with work, family, social commitments, with life in general. It nearly seemed that so many of us perhaps felt we were swirling around in the outer layers of the general storm and force of life.

Amazing to think that shortly after this, we all did really get caught up in the forceful, damaging and life changing storm of Covid-19. We all learned very quickly just what a force of nature this particular storm is and we were all forced to experience massive life changes on every level as a result of it. Some people have suffered great mental, emotional, physical pain, loss and grief during this storm and some have managed to avoid the direct impact of its lash but everyone is living with this constant threat, this destructible invisible force of nature.

While many of us are still coming to terms with and digesting the pandemic, we have somehow managed to find and embrace a calm, solace and serenity deep within the ‘eye of this storm’. Many people have welcomed an intimate, safe, private place to breathe inside their own homes and with their own close family and loved ones during varying levels of lockdown restrictions. It almost seemed that during Ireland’s first lockdown earlier in the year, that many of us got the chance to revert deeply back into our lives, our homes and had the opportunity to slow down from the hectic pace of life.

For me, both the first lockdown and the present one have truly transformed my ability to self soothe, to calm and relax myself, my mind, body and emotions. They have really enabled me to find my own calm, peace and serenity during an invasive, brutal and life destroying storm. I am a naturally anxious and nervous person and so I have a very easily stimulated and over reactive amygdala (the stress response centre in the brain). This means that something another person may perceive as a minimal threat or danger in life has the ability to send me into ‘fight, flight or freeze’ mode, into a state of panic and fear. Many people experience this on a daily basis and some only for the first and subsequent times since the storm of Covid-19 hit.

This is where I use daily mindfulness, meditation, body movement, good food choices, water intake, extra early bed times and early rise times, walking, being outside in Mother Earth’s beauty and serenity to help me to find and maintain calmness, balance and ease of living even while being in the ‘eye of the Covid-19 storm’. What’s really surprised me is that we all have the potential to get swept up in the turmoil of its continuing swirling winds, waves, tornadoes, earth quakes and so much more but when we take the time to self soothe, to self-care, to be kind and compassionate towards ourselves, we can feel solid, grounded, earthed and balanced in the ‘eye of this storm and of our own storm’, even when everything seems completely chaotic and out of control around us.

Living with and in present moment awareness really helps us to find inner calm and peace, regardless of any external or environmental impacts. Our minds are naturally programmed to a ‘negativity bias’, which means that they will always naturally find the negative and danger elements in any situation before the positive, as a mechanism to keep us safe and on alert.

But when we tune into our present moment environment, whether there is a real threat to our continuance of life at that exact moment, rather than what our brain wants us to believe, it can become obvious that the threat we may be experiencing may not actually be happening or be real in our physical environment or in that very second of our present moment. This is how we create ‘our calm, peace and serenity’ in the eye of any storm. You can use mindfulness, meditation and self-compassion to learn to live in present moment awareness, without believing all your thoughts or what your mind wants you to believe.

I came across this quote recently, it really sums up our own power, choice and perception about any of life’s storms and about how beneficial it is to create our own calm, peaceful and safe eye in any storm:

“If you treat every situation as a life and death matter,
you’ll die a lot of times”
(Dean Smith)

HOW to create calm, peace and serenity in the ‘eye of your storm’:

The following is a step by step guide on how to create calm, peace and serenity in the eye of your storm:

When you find your mind racing or symptoms of fear and panic arising in your body, take 3 deep, calm, restoring and regulating breaths, in through your nose and out through your mouth.

2. Bring your awareness to your feet as you anchor them firmly to the ground underneath you. Take a moment and take 3 more regulating breaths as you do so.

3. On the next in-breath, breathe in ‘peace’ and on the next out-breath, breathe out ‘calm’. Say these words to yourself as you continue for 5 more in and out breaths.

4. On the next in-breath, say to yourself ‘I am happy, I am safe, all is well’. Repeat this affirmation to yourself for 5 more in and out breaths.

5. If there is an immediate physical threat or danger to your life in this moment, trust that your body will release the stress, adrenaline and cortisol hormones into your bloodstream to help you to remove yourself to immediate safety. When you are in a safe place, start to regulate your breathing, your mind and emotions by placing one hand on your heart, one hand on your tummy and as you breathe in, say to yourself ‘I am safe, this danger will pass, all will be well’. Repeat this affirmation for 5 more in and out breaths.

6. Continue taking deep regulating breaths until you feel the fear and panic starting to subside and until you feel the calm, peace and serenity starting to present itself inside ‘the eye of your storm’.

When you are experiencing fertility challenges, you can feel so isolated, so lonely, so stuck, so consumed by the lack […]

When you are experiencing fertility challenges, you can feel so isolated, so lonely, so stuck, so consumed by the lack of progression in your life, like you are drowning in your own pool of trauma, grief, hurt, upset and fear.

Having personally experienced fertility challenges over 13 years, from hormonal imbalances, structural problems, miscarriages to numerous fertility treatment cycles and all the despair, the loss of connection to yourself, to your partner, to your body, to your life, the loss of identity as a person that comes with explained or unexplained fertility difficulties, I can truly say that my own formal and informal Mindfulness practice has been a saviour in my ability to cope.

So much so, that through my lifestyle overhaul, implementing a more mindful way of living my everyday life and learning to love my body, I am currently expecting my third baby, which is a naturally conceived little miracle. Despite the medical findings, the diagnosis of a natural conception being ‘medically and structurally impossibly’, I feel that this pregnancy has been achieved because of the balance, the present moment living and awareness, self-compassion and empathy that I have introduced to myself and to my relationships through Mindfulness and Self-Compassion.

When we learn how to practise Mindfulness, how to live in more present moment awareness and how to become more ‘compassionate’ towards ourselves, our partner and in our relationships, we gain a greater understanding of common humanity. I soon realised that my husband and I were not the only couple experiencing fertility difficulties. Millions of other couples around the world experience similar complexities every day. I learned how to accept that this ‘horrible’, ‘painful’, ‘hurtful’, ‘overwhelming’, ‘invasive’ experience of struggling with fertility challenges was my experience and my husband’s experience. I learned various coping tools and techniques to help myself to start to live in this experience, to stop questioning why it was my experience and not someone else’s experience, why my friends could progress forward and start or expand their families and I couldn’t. I learned to have immense gratitude and appreciation for all the incredible functions that did work in my body and that keep me alive every second of every day.

I learned to recognise when my mind was getting pulled into deliberating thoughts of past mental, emotional and physical pains and trauma in relation to my fertility challenges and also when my mind was swirling in a thought storm of ‘you are not good enough’ and ‘nothing will ever change’, about myself and my future on this fertility path.

I started overhauling my whole life step by step. I used mindfulness, wellness, meditation, yoga, gratitude journaling, a consistent healing and empowering morning routine, a complete diet overhaul, consistent early bed times at night and early morning rising times, using essential oils and a cultivation of respect, care and nurture towards myself, my mind, my body and my emotions.

Over time I started to feel so much more balanced in my everyday living and I started to realise that I was ‘healing’ and ‘repairing’ myself from ‘the inside out’. I for the first time in my life started to feel ‘love’ and ‘warmth’ towards myself and it felt amazing!

This combination of Mindfulness and Self-Compassion helped me to recognise how much I had been and was pushing my physical body and in turn my mental and emotional systems through excessive and invasive fertility treatments and medications. I learned to gently console myself and my partner and this helped us both to make peace with our fertility experience.

By adopting a mindful and self-compassionate way of living our lives, myself and my husband learned how to laugh again. We learned how to feel alive, how to disconnect from the painful highs and lows of fertility challenges, the pains and trauma of the previous 13 years. We learned how to enjoy our lives again, to feel alive in the moment, in our present moment.

Just like choosing to nurture, care for and encourage a plant, flower or tree from seed to full bloom, I chose to be respectful to myself and my fertility experiences. I chose to nurture and care for my mental, emotional and physical health from despair to bloom. I chose to release myself from the never-ending self-critic, from the thoughts of failure and despair. I chose to create and become the ‘very best version’ of myself that I could be in each moment while living alongside my fertility challenges and for my husband and I, this has truly transformed our lives in unimaginable ways.

A beautiful empowering quote I love:

“Perhaps the butterfly is proof that you can go through a great deal of darkness and still become something beautiful”

(Source: tinybuddha.com)

HOW to be Self-Compassionate during Fertility Challenges:

The following is a step by step guide on how to be Self-Compassionate during Fertility Challenges:

1. Sitting with a straight spine or lying down, gently close your eyes, release any tension from your temples and jaws and begin by taking 3 regulating breaths, in through the nose, out through the mouth.

2. Now bring to your awareness the difficult fertility challenges you have been struggling with. Notice any emotions, feelings or sensations in your body as they arise. Notice what this feels like and realise that this is a moment of stress and suffering.

3. Soothe yourself with reassurance that stress and suffering are part of human life and that you are not alone in your suffering, it is ok for you to feel like you do.

4. Now gently place one or two hands on your heart and soothe yourself with kindness and compassion. Feel the warmth, love, care and compassion beaming through your hands into your heart.

5. On your next 3 breaths, breathe in kindness and compassion towards yourself and breathe out gentleness and acceptance for yourself and your fertility challenges (you can say these phrases to yourself as you do so).

6. Speaking to yourself like you would to your very best friend, say the following to yourself: ‘May I love myself in this moment, May I be a friend to myself right now, May I give myself kindness and compassion, May I accept myself as I am.

7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for as long as you wish. When you are ready, bring your awareness to how you are feeling now, remembering to ‘allow’ and ‘accept’ whatever it is you are feeling in this moment and gently open your eyes when you are ready.

This is one of my favourite questions to ask myself daily! It’s something I was introduced to some time ago […]

This is one of my favourite questions to ask myself daily! It’s something I was introduced to some time ago and it has been a fantastic way to really help myself to detach from my ‘thinking mind’ and to move more into my ‘being mind’ or my ‘doing mode’.

Sometimes, we can feel so overwhelmed by the general pace of life, trying to keep up, our work/life/family balance and all we can hear is that little voice inside our mind telling us how exhausted we are, how we will never catch up, that our situation and related experience will never change, that we are not good enough, that we will never be good enough, what’s the point in even trying?

But when we learn to be more kind and compassionate towards ourselves, towards these thoughts, emotions and feelings, we start to realise that maybe we are entitled to feel this way, maybe it is ok to feel and experience these things but we then also realise that maybe there is a better, more productive, more caring approach to dealing with and experiencing these thoughts, emotions and feelings, while getting through our day and feeling calm and happy in our mind and body.

So now, when I am feeling tired, sickly, overwhelmed, annoyed, confused, like there is no breathing space, I ask myself ‘what does my body NEED right now’? I ask my mind to move over and to let my body truly tell me what it needs in order to process how it is feeling and to start to feel more comfortable, balanced and stable.

Most of time my body will scream to me, “you need to go to bed early tonight, you need to get out for a walk and breathe in the fresh air, you need to ground yourself outside with Mother Earth, you need to do your yoga, you need to take an Epson salt bath with relaxing essential oils, you need to inhale a nice essential oil diffuser blend to clear away that sinus pressure, you need some quiet time in your mind so you can clear the internal storm, you need to take 5/10/15/20 mins out to listen to a relaxing meditation or to just sit in your own presence and use your breath as your anchor point to your present moment, you need to drink more water to re-hydrate, you need a nice hot cup of tea and maybe a little square or two of chocolate, you need apply your essential oils to your temples and the back of your neck for that headache or to your lower back for that constant back ache or have a relaxing massage, you need to get a hug from someone, you need to give a hug to someone, you need to play and get silly with your children until you can’t breathe from laughing, you need to hold your cat on your knee and feel the gentle rhythm of her breath and listen to the hum of her purring, you need to brush your dog, you need a call a friend, you need to turn off your phone, you need to disconnect from social media for a bit, you need to clean out some of the clutter that’s been driving you crazy in your home/office”!!! So many things our body may need to help us to feel better but most of the time, we can’t connect or hear these signals or clues from our bodies as our minds are in full swing, in over drive, telling us that nothing will help us feel better or demotivating us.

The interesting thing about this is that most of us already know the things we ‘want’ or ‘need’ to do to help us to feel energised, happy, motivated, to enjoy life, but when we listen more to the constant chatter, downgrading, anxiety, second guessing that our minds love to invade us with, this is when we can fail to see just exactly what it is that our bodies need in any particular moment.

This is how Mindfulness, Meditation and a general overall Wellness approach to your daily living can help to calm the constant storm of thoughts, emotions and subsequent feelings that you experience. Mindfulness and Meditation can help you to live in an increased state of pleasant awareness to your present moment and it gives you the coping tools and techniques to deal with whatever challenges or difficulties your present moment may give rise to.

Please have a look at my website www.leonamcdonnell.com for further information and guidance on how you can adopt a more mindful approach to your everyday living!
